Shady Acres Spaniels
English Springer Spaniels:

Although Spaniel like dogs existed for several
centuries, the English Springer Spaniels became
a distinct breed in the 1800's.  They were
originally named after the Duke of Norfolk
"Norfolk Spaniels" and changed to English
Springer Spaniels in the 1900's. English Springer
Spaniels were trained to flush game birds out
into the air where they could be caught by
trained hawks and falcons.

Character: This breed is obedient and sociable.
They are quick to learn and love to be part of the
family.  They enjoy playing and going for walks.
If they are ignored or do not get their exercise
they can be hyperactive.

Temperament: They are known for their ability to
get along well with children and other pets,
including dogs. It is important to note that due
to their instinctive hunting qualities, homes with
pet birds may not be a suitable fit. Some English
Springer Spaniels may be aggressive with same
sex dogs. As with all breeds, socialization when
young is best and our staff spends time with the
pups to start the socialization process off right
from the beginning.  See
our staff information.

Coat: The English Springer Spaniel has a dirt and
water resistant coat that is smooth and dense.
They are white with either black or liver (dark
brown). They may have tan markings, usually on
the cheeks or above the eyes. They typically shed
in spring and summer months, but do shed
occasionally in the fall.

Size: The English Springer Spaniel has a shoulder
height of approximately 18-20 inches at the
withers (on the ridge between the shoulder
blades) and weighs on average 50-55lbs). The
females tend to be between 17-19 inches and
weigh between 34-45lbs. They have long ears
and oval eyes. Working English Springer Spaniels
and show English Springer Spaniels can vary
significantly in appearance.

Training: The English Springer Spaniel is not
difficult to train. It is
very intelligent and likes to
make it's family happy. The English Springer
Spaniel is ranked 13th in Stanley Coren's, The
Intelligence of Dogs.

Activity: The English Springer Spaniel is a
hunting breed that loves going for walks,
playing, retrieving, and swimming.
